Officers Election 2012-2013

OFFICERS ELECTION 2012-2013

PRESIDENT CANDIDATES

Name: John McGill
Position running for: President
Biography:
I am 19 years old and this is my second semester here at RVCC. I went to high school at North Hunterdon High School in Annandale where I ran on the track & field team and I was president of German Club. I am a very outgoing person and, despite the fact that I am fairly new to this school, I have already made plenty of friends with fellow students and my professors. I am a pre-pharmacy major and I intend to go to the Rutgers school of pharmacy to get my Pharmacy Doctorate. I have always had a strong passion for science and I never get tired of learning new things. Ever since I was very young I have striven to challenge myself at everything I do. Whether it is beating a personal record in a track event or going above and beyond on a research paper I never cease to push myself to new heights. A lot of people don't know this about me but there was a point in my life when I wanted to go to school to be a poet because I love to read and write poetry. Although I now know the true calling in my life is pharmaceuticals, I still frequently write my own poetry and read the works of my favorite poets such as Walt Whitman, Robert Frost and Edgar Allan Poe. Some of my other hobbies include reading, snowboarding, biking, and playing video games.

Name: Joshua Beck
Position running for: President
Biography:
My name is Joshua Beck.  I am 18 years old. I am running for the office of President of Phi Theta Kappa.  I am attending RVCC to attain my Associates’ Degree in Engineering Science.   After completing this degree, I plan to transfer to a four year university to finish my Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.  I particularly enjoy math and science with calculus being my favorite subject.  I am active in two other RVCC clubs, the Engineering club and Cru.

I was president of my 4H Hunterdon Deadeyes shooting club last year and went to the National Invitational Shooting Competition for Shotgun in Texas in June.  I enjoyed the responsibilities of being president as well as shooting sports of all kinds.

Helping others is something I strive to do.  I enjoy coming up with technological ideas to make our world a more efficient place to live, and then attempting to make those ideas a reality.  I was homeschooled from kindergarten through high school.  In high school, my friends and I often volunteered our time to help other people in Hunterdon County through our teen service group of which I was vice president.  I also volunteer at a camp in the summer, counseling kids and assisting the director.  I like to help people succeed particularly in academics.

Playing around with my guitar and bass guitar is a way I relax.  I also enjoy practicing American Sign Language and learning vocabulary from other languages.  My hobbies include playing video games, fishing, shooting sports, and hanging out with my friends.

VICE PRESIDENT CANDIDATES

Name: Kerri Brochhagen
Position running for:  Vice President
Biography:
My name is Kerri Brochhagen and this is my second semester at Raritan Valley Community College. I am twenty years old and graduated from Ridge High School in Basking Ridge, NJ in June of 2010. In high school I was actively involved in sports, clubs, and student government.  From being a part of the Ridge Red Devil Lacrosse and Field Hockey teams, I have learned leadership and cooperative skills that have allowed me to be successful in future leadership positions. I was a member of Ridge’s Green Team and the International Humanitarianism Society, where I served as a secretary and public relations officer. As a Senator of the Student Government Association, I was constantly communicating with my peers and faculty, acting as the voice of the student body. Upon graduation, I was awarded “Friendliest” by my peers for our senior superlatives.
In the fall of 2010, I attended Seton Hall University. In the year of my attendance I joined a national organization where I served as secretary. It was at Seton Hall where I began to pursue a major in communications with a concentration in broadcasting. I decided to attend Raritan Valley Community College to obtain my associates degree, with plans in transferring to a 4-year college in the future.
This semester I was given the opportunity to become a Student Ambassador and I immediately began to get involved around campus. As a Student Ambassador I have to be organized, responsible and outgoing. So far I feel this semester has gone great. I am so excited and honored to now be a part of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. I believe I have a lot to bring to the organization and I am looking forward to the future as a Kappan!

I’m currently working on my associate degree in biology and I plan on transferring and working towards a bachelor degree. I’ve been a member of Phi Theta Kappa for about 2 semesters now and being involved in the organization has really shown me many positive ways I can use my time and energy. I am running for Vice President of Leadership and Service because I would love to be involved more throughout the college and Phi Theta Kappa and I think that I could be a helpful member to the PTK Officer team.

VICE PRESIDENT OF SCHOLARSHIP AND HALLMARKS CANDIDATES

Name: Christopher Speakman
Position Running for: Vice President of Scholarship and Hallmarks
Biography:
My name is Christopher Speakman and I am running for vice president of scholarships and hallmarks for Phi Theta Kappa.  For the past year, I have been serving as Phi Theta Kappa president.  Our chapter of Phi Theta Kappa has won a large number of awards and is counted among the best in the whole country.  Under my leadership, we won the highest regional award for our projects.   Before coming to RVCC, I worked for a number of years as an import coordinator and before that, as an English teacher in Eastern Europe.  I have been a bartender, a room service cashier, a waiter, and vice president of sales for a small import company, so I have seen the world from many different points of view.  I realized several years ago that I wanted to totally change the direction of my life, and I came here to RVCC to enter the nursing program. Coming back to school has really been a turning point in my life; I feel like I have a purpose, which I lacked before, and I feel more motivated and energetic than I did when I was younger.   I was invited to join Phi Theta Kappa in October of 2010, and I have found it to be a great organization full of motivated and intelligent people.  I hope that I can continue to serve our organization in the future and help provide a smooth transition and a bit of experience to next year’s officer team.

Name: Jill Carman
Position running for: Vice President of Scholarship and Hallmarks
Biography:
My name is Jill Carman from Flemington, NJ. This is my first year at Raritan Valley and was just inducted into Phi Theta Kappa this semester. Although I am currently an undecided major, I am planning on either being a History or English major when I transfer. I am excited to become more involved with PTK next year since I will be graduating in the Spring. I served as an officer for German Honor Society in high school for two years and believe I have the skill set needed to be VP of Scholarship and Hallmarks. After learning of the open officer positions for PTK, I feel I am best suited for this job. I am currently part of RVCC's Honors College and will be able to help recruit potential PTK members from the incoming class next Fall. I am also comfortable with public speaking and enjoy meeting new people.

VICE PRESIDENT OF MEMBERSHIP AND SECRETARY CANDIDATES

Name: Katarina Loizou
Position running for:  Vice President of Membership and Secretary
Biography:
Hi! My name is Katarina Loizou, I am a freshman at Raritan Valley Community College and will be running for the position of Secretary/VP of Membership. I am a liberal arts major with many interests in several different fields. I have always had an intense love for art and know it will always be a hobby of mine. Since high school I have aspired to be everything from a veterinarian to a museum curator. Even though my past interests have faded with time, my love for art and art history has remained strong, as well as my desire to have a career as a museum curator has. Along the path toward my dream job, I have worked in many part time jobs to help me make my way. As a swim instructor/lifeguard for four years, I grew close to my colleagues while I started my life in the working world. With time, I transitioned into babysitting and I now work for three fantastic families. In addition to having gained a solid bond with each of the families, I also developed confidence in my leadership skills, organizational skills, and the ability to deal with tough situations under a wide variety of circumstances. When college came along, an additional career came along as well. You may recognize me from the bookstore here at school. Through working at the school bookstore I learned more about team work and the school as a whole than I ever could have hoped for. I can’t wait to meet the rest of the Kappans and start building new friendships within its prestigious group.
