College Completion. "Achieving the Dream" PowerPoint presentation

College Completion. "Achieving the Dream"

PowerPoint presentation script.
SLIDE 1:
Hi my name is __________ and my name is _____________ and we are active members of Phi Theta Kappa, the honors society at RVCC. Today we are going to talk to you about the resources on campus to help improve college completion.
SLIDE 2:
College Completion Corps is a national campaign to support the importance of completing college and earning a degree, whether it is an associate’s degree or a higher education degree.
SLIDE 3:
There are obviously many long-term, positive outcomes to completing college and earning your degree.
SLIDE 4:
Some startling facts about college completion are 85% of students aspire to complete an Associates degree but only 45% complete the degree. 50% of students aspire to complete a Baccalaureate degree but only 10-20% complete.
SLIDE 5:
54% of students need to work to support themselves or families and could not balance work and classes. 31% cannot afford college. 62% of all college students who drop out are responsible for paying for their own education. While 65% of students who drop out plan to return, only about 38% do. Students at RVCC are very lucky to have the resources to change these statistics, so please take advantage of them.
SLIDE 6:
Why commit to complete? Students who complete their associate degree or certificate can expect to earn about $400,000 more in a lifetime than a high school graduate. If that isn’t motivation, then what is?
SLIDE 7:As you can see, completing college is an essential part of holding a promising future. Many students feel that they are at a disadvantage and cannot graduate with their associate’s degree from RVCC. There are numerous possible roadblocks to academic success but the campus offers solutions to help overcome most personal issues and achieve the highest education.
SLIDE 8:
Poverty is one of America’s hidden epidemics. It is defined as a lack of resources and affects all age groups and cultures. Many people suffering from poverty cannot afford health insurance.
SLIDE 9:
Did you know that the college offers health insurance? Full time students automatically obtain health insurance as part of their tuition. Part-time students have the option to receive these benefits by paying $45.00 extra with their tuition each semester.
SLIDE 10:
Are you aware that you might be covered under your parents’ insurance? Federal law states that if your parents have health insurance, you may be eligible to receive benefits until the age of 26.
SLIDE 11:
To get insurance from RVCC, obtain an insurance application from the finance office or speak with a representative for further information. If you are interested, please note that the college only offers basic medical health insurance.
SLIDE 12:
Students may have a hard time finding an affordable place to live while pursuing their education.
SLIDE 13:
If eligible, there are many local organizations that help people who are in financial trouble have a safe place to live. These are some possible organizations to contact.
SLIDE 14:
Many students at RVCC are also parents. You might think that this inhibits you from attending class and doing homework.
SLIDE 15:
If any of these questions apply to you, then there are a few possible solutions.
SLIDE 16:
The Children’s Campus Center is a great service for RVCC students with young children (three months through five years of age.) The children participate in many on-campus opportunities provided by the College.
SLIDE 17:
If interested, here is some more information and who to contact.
SLIDE 18:
Sometimes, students feel they cannot continue their education because they are discouraged by poor grades.
SLIDE 19:
If any of these apply to you, there are many options on campus to help you overcome this and be the best student you can be.
SLIDE 20:
The Academic Support Center is a great, free resource at the college. The tutors are very helpful and willing to help as much as necessary.
SLIDE 21:
Outside of the Academic Support Center, students can visit professors during designated office hours, form a study group with classmates, spread studying out over the week, or many other options.
SLIDE 22:
Another roadblock many students face is having trouble focusing on their schoolwork. This affects a lot of students but it doesn’t have to hold them back from their education.
SLIDE 23:
There are great people on campus to help with any personal issues. Do not be afraid to contact them. Other, more personal issues also stand in the way of completing college. RVCC takes sexual harassment and stalking issues very seriously.  If you wish to file a complaint or just talk to someone, contact the advising and counseling office. Also, contact Dr. Chan if you have issues with abusive relationships or depression.
SLIDE 24:
Getting an education is expensive today. A very common issue that students face is not having the financial means to support their education.
SLIDE 25:
There are many great job resources on campus. A benefit of getting work through the school is that it does not take away as much from your classes and study time.
SLIDE 26:
Another way to overcome the roadblock of financial troubles is financial aid.
SLIDE 27:
The Financial Aid Department offers Raritan Valley Community College students assistance with FAFSA forms which you can view online through the student’s Lion’s Den account.
SLIDE 28:
Anyone who demonstrates financial need is eligible. There are many different types of financial aid available. If you have any questions, visit the RVCC website or stop by the financial aid office.
SLIDE 29:
Raritan Valley also offers many diverse academic scholarships. For more information about them visit the RVCC home page, click students services link, and then click financial aid.
SLIDE 30:
The world needs your leadership, your drive and your commitment. Commit to complete!
Thank you for listening and thank you ____________ (Professor’s name) for allowing us to use class time to present this information.
